THE CATSUP STORY

Chorus Consulting is focused on practical improvement.  What does that mean?  An old consulting story can illustrate the point:

Some high end McKinsey-like consultants just completed a study for a large company and were sitting down with the CEO over lunch in the company cafeteria to present results and recommendations. As they presented lofty recommendations, the CEO interjected only twice. First, as he applied catsup onto his burger, “The catsup is too runny in our cafeteria.”  The consultants paused, looked at each other and carried on. The second as he applied catsup to his French fries (aka: chips), “I told them last year that the catsup is too runny.”

The consultants finished their last recommendation and asked the CEO for feedback. His reply:  “I don’t think you heard a word I said during your presentation.” The consultants looked at each other, and one said “All we heard you say was the catsup is too runny.” The CEO snapped back, “Exactly. I told them a year ago that the catsup was too runny and here I am with runny catsup. I want recommendations I can get done. Go back, re-think your recommendations and come back with things I can get done.”

What is the point? For most enterprises the road to innovation is rooted in practical and common sense strategies. Unfortunately, these can be hard to discern amongst a backdrop of lofty ideas, management strategies, and popular press. The biggest obstacles are the inability to get everyone focused and “Saying the same thing at the same time together as one.” Chorus Consulting focuses not on “intergalactic change” in and of itself but in achieving change by:

An example can help illustrate how the practical can have game changing results.

Chorus Consulting looks with pride at hundreds of “a-ha” moments in which a practical innovation had game changing results and brought a team together.  As we say:

“Saying the same thing, at the same time, together as one”
